With 26 years of equine experience, I have a very good working knowledge (which is constantly expanding), however, I rarely will refer to myself as a "horse trainer", as I do not break/start horses or work with serious/dangerous issues. I always do my best to figure out what a horse is thinking and have been praised for my ability to "get inside a horse's head". However, due to current medical problems, I am no longer able to offer schooling/training rides on client's horses. Ground work sessions will still offered for certain horses after I have fully recovered from my 3/31/17 back surgery.

All services are available during DAYLIGHT hours; ground work sessions are generally 30 minutes in length. Weather is always a factor, so please understand that I do not work horses in triple-digit heat, in high winds or in the rain. Please e-mail me at for more information on these services and availability.

*Please note that The Cantering Cactus is not a facility or location, but the name of my lesson and training business itself*

About Trainer Jessie Mix

Growing up in NY, I learned the traditional "american forward riding system" in hunters, jumpers and equitation.  I have been riding for 26 years and it is what I live for!  As a junior rider, I was competitive in horse shows, especially when I began showing in the jumpers.

Growing up, all my free time was with horses, soaking in all the knowledge and riding time I could, on any horse they would let me ride, to become a well-rounded rider.  Thirteen years ago, I found my passion for teaching others to ride these magnificent creatures when I began working as an assistant trainer at a Long Island riding school.  Soon after, I was recruited for a live-in position at a show barn in Rochester, NY.  There, I taught private and group riding lessons, schooled the young horses and led trail rides in addition to feeding the large barn full of hard-working horses daily.

Upon moving to Nevada in 2001, I took lessons with various hunter/jumper trainers in the Las Vegas valley.  After purchasing my incredible Thoroughbred gelding, I began offering free lance training and equine services to horse owners in the Henderson and Las Vegas areas.  I have been praised for my patience and ability to push a rider while increasing their confidence at the same time.  My students and I also attend local schooling shows.  I participate in clinics and lessons myself whenever possible and I continue my hunt for horsemanship knowledge...there is always so much more to learn!
